Let’s go Nuts!

Originally from Brazil, peanuts were brought to France and Africa, and then later introduced into the colonies in the 1700s.  Commercial peanuts were first grown near Wilmington, NC around 1800.  Part of the pea or bean family, peanuts are a rich source of protein and are grown on more than 90,000 acres in northeastern NC.  Our state ranks 5th in the nation in peanut production and is the leading producer of Virginia type varieties.  These varieties are usually sold as in the shell or cocktail nuts.

Peanut plants produce small yellow flowers.  After pollination, the flowers wilt, a peg projects into the ground, on which the peanut develops.  Most people are surprised to learn that peanuts actually grow underground!  Planted in May, this energy rich food source is harvested from late September to mid-October.

After harvested, the peanuts are inspected and eventually sold to a sheller.  Peanuts are marketed in a variety of ways- peanut butter, brittle, chocolate covered and even peanut oil!
